I am an RPN who runs a foot care clinic and we have preparations that clients can purchase. I know RNs and RPNs are not authorized to sell medications. What preparations are considered medications?
A medication is, “any substance that is manufactured, sold or represented for use in the diagnosis, treatment, mitigation or prevention of a disease, disorder, abnormal physical or mental state or their symptoms” (Drugs and Pharmacies Regulation Act, 1990, s.1)
To help you determine if a preparation you are using is regulated as a medication, refer to the national drug schedule on the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities website.
If you are still not sure if the preparation fits the definition of a medication, you may wish to consult a lawyer.
